I could imagine that where the mountain meets the sea are big cliffs with caves, maybe connected with the Beacon Room. And the forest should not only be deciduous forest but also have some darker parts with coniferous forest, maybe near the bad-magic line. A swamp or a moor could also be some natural boundary. Or a marsh that verges on the sea and slowly turns into meadows in the inland could make it nearly impossible for humans to come there from the seaside…and if there would be some islands with forests in the marsh that could be a good hiding place. I’ve seen something like that in the Septimus Heap Saga.
If you need help with the map just ask me, I have Photoshop and my skills with that are not the worst, besides I’m often make maps or sceneries for RPG with that. I’d only need some outlines from the different areas and some short notes where what is. Including blank spots and expand the map wouldn’t be a problem.

From what's been mentioned in the game so far, it seems that the forest is at least mostly coniferous.
I think having caves connect to the cliffs over the sea is interesting, but I worry about it making the sea too accessible. The humans have a hard time getting to the sea because of trolls, and since trolls live underground, the elves should have an equally hard time...maybe there are tunnels that connect, but I would think they're rigged with traps.

Just though that a mix between both would be better…or there’s coniferous forest on one side of the mountain and deciduous forest on the other side. Could also be a possibility. Didn’t mean to make it easier for our elves to come to the sea, but somewhere the tunnels from the beacon room must lead I agree that there should be traps and maybe the tunnels are frequented by trolls as well. Or what about an labyrinth that stretches all over the mountain? Something like that: www.tavia.co.uk/earthsea/images/labyrinth.jpg Many intertwined tunnels, where you could walk days without finding an exit and it’s easy to lost the way and end up in dead ends, larded with traps.

Thanks for the offer of help with the map! I'll see how far I get on my own first and then maybe call for help The forest on the sea-side of the mountain is indeed mostly made up of pines and spruces. I'll see what trees with leaves might fit in; there could be some birches, aspen, etc. I'll look into placements of possible marshes and such when I sit down with the map next! As for the tunnels from the Beacon Room, I'd actually planned for them to lead into dead ends for now. The trolls who were working here were freaked out badly by the activation of the beacon, so they did what smart trolls do and caved in the tunnels behind them as they fled. If we choose to open up the cave-ins (which will be a lot of work) we'll end up in tunnels actively used by trolls before we reach the sea. The trolls live within the mountain, so going through it to the sea means not only running into traps, but also running into the trolls themselves. I hope I'll be able to make this all more clear once I have the map up!

Here comes another ugly map! But at least this is done in a map making program and not by mouse-clicking XD Feel free to download and do whatever you want with this map! Add to it or re-draw it from scratch, as you please. I can send you a larger version if you need it. Also, just putting in dots where you'd like stuff to be is great! Even though our elves haven't been beyond the mountains yet, or really beyond the woods either, doesn't mean we as players can't know what's over there. Also, the red line is the 'bad magic' line, just so you know. And the dark hole in one mountain is the Beacon Room. This is not meant to be to scale. Questions? Comments?

I'm down with the magic and trolls and humans. Was thinking that maybe it's not just a conflict which made humans leave the sea. Could it be that since it is inland (not sure of what it's called) that the sea was frozen and made the land closest uninhabitable? The reason the trolls manage is that they can use magic to heat it up a bit during winter times, though it might not be so strong as not to make it freeze winter times.

Canon trolls aren't magical...and I don't know how I would feel about ours being so. And I don't believe we're so far north that the sea would freeze. Our climate is temperate.

I'm not sure I understood exactly what you meant Anna, but I think there could be an ice age past to this location that could work with that idea. The trolls may not be magical, but they do have technology that might help them out against cold. We agreed early on that the weather in Beacon Call would have four seasons and be much like the Swedish High Coast. But the place can of course have an icey past
