History:
Silverthorn's mother, Surefire, was the proud and capable huntress sister of his tribe's chief Calmwater. He was born out of a Recognition between long-time lovemates, though Surefire named her cub Burr for being "the little burr in the boot that kept me from hunting!"
Surefire and Arrowswift Recognized again very soon after Burr was born, when the cub was only eight years old. After the birth of their daughter Tallshoot, Surefire was eager to get back to her hunting duties - too eager. She died by misadventure only a handful of days after Tallshoot's birth, leaving little Burr to care for his new sister as Arrowswift fell into a deep depression. Burr grew up a serious, dedicated boy, and even after his father recovered he was always the leader in the little band of cubs all born close together as the Longvale tribe experienced a period of calm and fertility. He and his sister Tallshoot were always very close even as she grew quite wild with him holding all the responsibility. It was she who lured him to climb up one of the sheer cliffs of the Longvale, an escapade which nearly cost them both their lives. In saving his sister - yet again - Burr earned the adult name Greenthorn. Paradoxically the experience made him loosen up quite a bit, realizing how short a Wolfrider's life could be.
The golden age of the Longvale elves ended abruptly with the arrival of humans, who settled on the plateau on top of the cliffs and began competing with the Wolfriders for territory and game. The tribe had no previous experience with humans and a number of accidents and hot heads led to the outbreak of violent conflict, in which the elves were outmatched by the humans' numbers and their metal weapons. An early victim was Chief Calmwater, who had always been peaceful, almost passive, and attempted to deal with the humans by coming to them and trying to talk. Since he died childless, the tribe was thrown into disarray, and eventually decided on Calmwater's nephew Greenthorn as their next chief.
Greenthorn rose to the occasion. He reversed Calmwater's policy of hiding from and attempting to appease the humans, and instead led bold raids on them whenever their hunting parties ventured down into the vale. In one such raid, he acquired his new namesake, a spear tipped with brightmetal; but in the same he also lost his lovemate of many seasons, Quickfisher. This was when his grudge against the humans became personal, more than a matter of his tribe's survival.
The newly named Silverhorn redoubled his efforts, and led a raid on the humans' own camp, where he killed their leader's daughter - a bold woman who had long led the human hunters. With this stroke he finally managed to instil enough fear in the humans for them to begin avoiding the Longvale, securing his tribe's territory. After two years of such steady peace, he took a lovemate again, the quirky crafter Dandelion. She and his sister have both been attempting to make him a bit more open-minded about humans and the Way, but their success so far has been limited.
