Badger smiled softly at the conversation going on, having started to inch closer toward No-Sting. The way the tuft-eared maiden wondered about children without Recognition, it brought up memories in Badger, like bubbles from the bottom of the pond. The smile on her face faded lightly, but she decided she would tell about Sweetpea some other time. It was not the right time or company to bring up the misfortune she had faced someplace and some time else.
There was a soft cough, and a lightly choking sound from her, however, as she piped up: "Sometimes offspring happens without...", and Badger looked at Tambri and Eryk -- apparently Eryk was from a tribe that had abandoned the old customs. That was all the wolfrider maiden managed to say, before the topic shifted back toward sharing the name and what Milo had chosen to do with Choice and some others.
Milo was a curious creature to the wolfrider, and she had mostly kept her path out of his way. Still, there was intriguing aura around him -- kind of like many others, like Choice, like Flint... Did Badger want to even think about the possibility of as many different realities as grains of sand in the bottom of the river.
Speaking of which, one of the more enigmatic elves piped up again, as Flint asked what Recognition even was. Badger stared at him with wide eyes, like a rabbit in front of a wolf, but then she moved again one inch closer to No-Sting. How to explain the unexplainable?

Eryk felt like there were many things said in between breaths and spoken words, but he really did not care much about it. He had exhausted himself day and night after one another trying to reach out to his folks, but no one answered. So, he had decided to focus on re-building his life anew. "Yah, my folks really don't bother much with Recognition anymore...", he managed to add, and then Flint asked about Recognition. Just like the wolfrider maiden now, Eryk looked at the fire shaper for a moment, and then returned to the task of sharpening the poles.
It was not really his place to answer, since he had never sired a child inside or outside of the thing that was now the hot topic in this discussion.

Juniper was not entirely thrilled about the idea of willingly sharing names. Some old couples, people who had been mated for life for ages... They probably chose to do so. But, as the blue-skinned Reefshadow had mentioned; no one was forcing no one to share their name. The very idea of forcing it out of people made the tree shaper feel a tad sick. Even the pure chance of Recognition had been difficult enough for him, who liked his privacy...
There was a lot of discussion that did not concern him in the slightest, but then Flint dropped the burr in the midst of discussion. Juniper got up from his seat, having dealt with the phenomenon last (as far as he knew).
"Recognition is when two souls meet and make a start for a new one.", he said, but it did sound rather flat as he tried to explain it in spoken word. "I would guess different elves describe it differently, like ... one of my old tribemates said she felt an emptiness filled she did not know she even had." There was a thoughtful murmuring sound from the blond tree shaper, as he considered his less than ideal approach to the meeting he had had with Greywing.
"Some others take it in with fear and lash out.", he admitted, "but the joining to come soon after, it ensures the offspring belongs to the group of strong and capable."
Another little bit of a choking sound from Badger's direction, but Juniper was unsure what had upset the maiden so bad.

Her lips turned down slightly at the corners at Keleero's response; he was not good at hiding how he was feeling in sends, but his reaction to how gentle hers were was nothing new; eventually, he'd learn that she genuinely meant no ill will. The sheer discomfort that leaked through, about the entire conversation, is what made her frown.
~**I'm not sure I believe you, but you don't have to talk about it unless you're ready,**~ she responded to the glider.
She was sure there were other things she was going to respond to, but Flint's question caught her so off guard that her gold eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. It was one thing not to have experienced it - High Ones knew she hadn't - but to not know what it was?
Carefully, she sent, **From my understanding, it is a knowing of the other elf in a way that simply being told a soul name pales in comparison.** Sunset worked very hard to keep her astonishment out of her send. **It is...like finding the matching half to your soul.**

Nightbird had to refrain from a snort of laughter at the locksend; it defeated the purpose if people knew you were doing it. ~**He seems sweet, if a bit...wallowy.**~
As a child born of Recognition, Flint's question seemed so alien to her.
"Do your people not Recognize?" The dark haired maiden gestured towards Eryk. "Like his? That seems so strange to me, but I guess it's not unheard of. My sister was in training to become the lorekeeper for my tribe, and I remember something about...about us not always having had soul names."
~**That one's definitely got a burr up his rump,**~ she continued in her conversation with Mahrak, 'that one' clearly meaning Keleero. ~**Does he know I can smell him all over you?**~
Her mindvoice was filled with mirth, gently teasing her friend.

Tambri listened to the comments and tried to keep up as the topics bounced around. She knew no one was forcing them to reveal their soul names. They'd have a hard time getting her to speak her own.
"Soul meets soul when eyes meet eyes."
It was a simple statement and all she said regarding the topic of recognition. The others seemed to have it covered.

None of them made much sense to Flint at all, the bits a puzzle barely fitting together. He looked from one to another, bewildered. “So you're telling me, there is some wild magic, hitting you out of nowhere, forcing you to share and make you have a... a child? And you think that is good??” To him it sounded like a nightmare, something that only the worst of his world might've thought up.
“There are no 'people' left. It was just me and Ivy and Sapling. And Sapling already is all I am not. I don't want someone else to take that away from me.” was his, somewhat rough, answer to Nightbird. Not her fault, she didn't knew about his world and the terrors there. But he missed his twin deeply and even the time here changed nothing about that hurt.

SL2657F looked over at Tambri when she said that some tribes didn't even recognize. She, herself, was created outside of recognition. Any recognition that took place was a surprise, and not even a pleasant one. It was almost a death sentence. If the resultant offspring had any forbidden gifts or abilities that were forbidden, both parents would end up executed. Even if they just slept together for fun, they could have offspring and it would be worse for the females in those cases.
"My people do not need it. I was... ehm... <created> by <scientists>... We have these names we keep safe. Hide them. I think of give mine but..." She shook her head. She knew her words were slow and heavily accented, but she was a quick learner. It was how she ended up in the SpecOps of the Dengali army. She still had her broken helmet in her room on a stone-shaped shelf. Same with her plasma gun and extra plasma, though she'd never thought to use the weapon. It was more a keepsake to remember the past. She wondered if the gun would even fire, now?
"<Scientists> make us. But we can re...cog...nize? And can have young with not."

Choice reached out over the back of his bond and squeezed Milo 's hand. He didn't say anything, couldn't find the words, but he did manage to send back gratitude. It would take time but he would do his best. He even managed not to flinch at learning Mahrak also knew Milo's soul name. "It is kind of you to translate for Spotfur," Choice said to Milo once the conversation had moved elsewhere, indicating SL2657F with a nod. He followed this by turning to her directly, to say: "I'm sorry I didn't speak out loud just now. Some things are hard to put into spoken words." When the subject turned to Recognition, Choice went suddenly numb. He'd known it likely would come up in a discussion about souls and soul names, and yet he seemingly hadn't braced enough for it. He silently brushed against the Aiya in his memory, against what he had left of Nettle and their unborn cub. A small, warm spot inside of him, despite loss coloring its edges with cold grief. He did sympathized with Flint 's reaction. Having Recognition explained to him this late in life, it must sound like madness, especially if Flint's unknown people had been elves who'd kept their soul names to themselves for safety's sake. But still... Blinking back tears, Choice managed to say: "I cannot speak for everyone, but Recognition can be beautiful. Mine was." He took a deep, shaky breath. "It doesn't take anything away. It gives." He then tried to make sense of what Spotfur said, looking to Milo for translation.

Post by Mahrak on Sept 24, 2023 11:13:26 GMT 1
~**I think he left a lot of people behind when he came here,**~ Mahrak lock-sent back to Nightbird on the topic of Eryk . He could sympathize with that, if only in the abstract. He'd willingly left his own people to seek out other elves, knowing he'd likely never return to them, even before the Beacon had snatched him up and put him here. Few others here had that benefit. "I vote we all agree that those who can share their soul names safely do so if they wish," Mahrak said, now that it had been clear some soul names were different than others, "and that the rest of us keep ours safely secret – unless Recognition has other plans, of course." He almost whirled around to look at Flint when he voiced his question about Recognition. In hindsight it made sense. Why would Flint have known what Recognition was? His mother had clearly barely raised him and then he'd spent his whole life wandering a nightmare land with only his twin for company. But still! To Nightbird, he sent a quick: ~**That one hasn't really had the chance to learn anything about his people. He was alone except for his brother until he came here.**~ It didn't fully explain Flint's situation, but hopefully it would give Nightbird enough context for what as about to be said. Flint was soon giving his own context. Mahrak kept out of trying to explain Recognition, seeing as there were enough voices doing that already, and instead smiled at Nightbird's friendly teasing. ~**Bird-bones is a mystery to us all, I fear. No one has done anything to him and he still acts as if we'll snap and bite if he let's his guard down for a heartbeat. Such a mess. But a pretty mess and a great tumble in the furs.**~ He allowed himself a self-satisfied smile. He doubted Keleero trusted him any more than anyone else in the holt – likely less than some – but he'd still made a connection with the glider. ~**I don't think he knows many of us see as much with our noses as with our eyes. I'll let him continue to think we're being sneaky for a while longer.**~

No-Sting contemplated Crispin's name for a moment. Knowing it was a soul name, if only its sound part, was a little unsettling. This brief discomfort thankfully didn't distract from the fact that Badger was approaching her bit by bit, and that lifted her heart enough to refocus. Clearly all soul names weren't the same, as with how many other things between different elves weren't the same. No one was demanding she share her soul openly so she had nothing to work herself up about. But when the topic turned to Recognition and cubs, it clearly distressed others - and not just Choice, whose sorrow was understandable. ~**Are you all right?**~ No-Sting lock-sent to Badger, confused by the maiden's reaction. With No-Sting focused on Badger, Swift-Wind was the one to react to Flint's bewilderment, by saying, "Recognition isn't magic. It just... is. Like how the birds know when to make nests and eggs, and how the tuftears find each other at the same time each season. It's not bad or good, it's just nature." That is how it had been taught to her, at least. To clarify what she meant, she continued: "Our histories tell that the High Ones rarely had children. When they came here to this world, they had need of children, but they'd forgotten how to follow nature. Recognition is what helped them once more have kits. I don't recall knowledge of Recognition always making strong and capable elves." She gave Juniper a respectful nod to show she wasn't questioning him, only sharing what she'd learned since childhood. "But it is what helps our bodies remember how to make children. It's exciting to hear some elves have managed that without Recognition needing to help it along!" Esseltu's halting explanation of how children were made among her people left Swift-Wind scratching her head. She'd understood some of the words, but she was clearly missing the key ones. Was this how they all sounded to Esseltu all the time? It must be so frustrating! "I'm sorry, I didn't follow that at all," Swift-Wind said to Esseltu in apology. "What is a <scientists>?"

Post by Keleero on Sept 24, 2023 11:20:44 GMT 1
Keleero, despite his skill at not sharing emotions in sending, knew this didn't keep him safe from others reading between the lines. Especially when he'd been in no state to fully utilize these skills at the beginning of this 'holt', when they'd all been disoriented and desperate for food and shelter. He almost resented Sunset for gently calling him out his clear discomfort, because in his experience, being see was the same as being prey. In response to her, he merely sent back a ping of neutral acknowledgment. He found little amusing in the playful disregard Reefshadow seemed to show for such a serious topic as soul names. In defensive reflex, he sent back a sarcastic: **If that was an attempt at a guess, I can assure you none of my names have ever been 'featherhead'.** Then he suddenly received a sending from Crispin , which he hadn't been prepared for. It took him a heartbeat or two to send a neutral reply: **My people have soul names.** He would have said more, but then the discussion dived full force toward the topic of Recognition, and Keleero had to take a deep breath to calm himself. Recognition, unlike skyfire and bears, was something he couldn't protect himself from or see coming. That didn't mean he'd welcome it. He sympathized all too well with Flint's reaction to the process of it being explained. All the talk of having children outside of Recognition rankled too, if in a different way. So many of these elves had apprently achieved Elyro's nightmarish dream: sharing their very blood with this world, reproducing the same way as its creatures, leaving most if not all magic behind. He couldn't claim they were like Elyro in any other sense, but the mere fact of them existing, of their peoples having done well for themselves outside a facsimile of a Palace, seemed to prove Elyro's philosophies right. Maybe Steepside would have prospered if they too had rushed out into nature and abandoned all the old ways. To distract himself from that thought and his own dread of Recognition, Keleero open-sent: **You're all acting as if you've never seen anyone have their soul name used against them.** Despite his lack of shared emotions or images, he couldn't help but let slip the reality that he certainly had seen such horrors.

Milo surely had no knowledge to share when it came to Recognition – he had no idea if he even could, but the whole topic of companionship like that still was something he rather avoided, too young for it. Better to focus on translating. “I know how she must feel like.” was his quiet reply to Choice. Thankfully he never had language problems, but he still could feel like a stranger among his own people.
A word in SL2657F explanation had him stumble though. <”I'm sorry – what is a 'scientist'? What do they do?”> Even if there was no word for it in elfin, he could describe it for the others.
Mahraks offer that anyone who wanted to should share was a kind one, but a little bit past reality. Hadn't he too asked for it and then reacted badly? It was something Milo had thought about already, for all it was hard. **Would someone... rather not know?** he asked around, glancing only a short moment at the redhead. The young one had learned some things too, didn't want to force it upon anyone. Even if it might be inevitable, if others started using it openly.

Given how puzzled Flint looked at all this information, Crispin chimed in once more, keeping her role as a mediator – she had a lot of years on many of them, but that didn't made her experiences any more valuable than theirs. Especially not in this world of mixed cultures.
**Recognition has brought me great joy, but sadness too. It depends on the circumstances. But I've not heard of soul names used against another – I can't imagine it'd be possible, with mine. There's nothing in it to harm.** was her reply to Keleero, hoping he'd elaborate yet choosing not to ask openly, to pressure him. Some horrors could not be spoken about easily.

OOC: Tambri and SL2657F in this one to make it simple.
Tambri glanced over to Keleero and nodded. "I have. It was horrible... and it should never be done... The... pain... And I've heard stories from long ago." She shuddered visibly and sighed. She glanced to Eryk and smiled. "Your people I like. Always up front and they never hide their feelings." She said it softly, hoping only he could hear.
SL2657F glanced to Milo at his question which was a followup to the previous question. Scientists were... well, they were scientists! She thought for a moment then spoke. "<A scientist... they are the ones who create our weapons and armor. They are the ones who found out how to make... well, my people. Science is the truths of the world and the experiments to discover those truths and to understand things we couldn't understand. Like how to make the poison in my collar. The serum that controls our minds.">
She shrugged, not sure how else to explain it.
