Hello everyone! Just realized we (as far as I can remember but my memory could be bad ) haven't established exactly how soul names work for our very different groups of elves. Since Milo goes by his soul name all the time, I thought it might be a good idea to figure out exactly what all our elves mean when they say "soul name" and what cultural significance they might (or might not!) have + if knowing a soul name grants anyone any sort of power over that elf in question.
I'm not looking for us all to decide how soul names should work for all elves. I think it's neat if different worlds' elves have different flavors of soul names (just like some elves don't have them at all). But I think it's be a good idea to clarify how soul names work for our elves' different tribes/peoples, so it'll be easier in-game to react to any soul name reveals that might or might not happen.
I'll go first! To keep it simple for myself, all my elves (Mahrak, Choice, Keleero & No-Sting, thus including Swift-Wind in this, with her player's permission) come from cultures where soul names are kept very close to the chest because they are such a powerful thing to share. To keep it short, if someone learns my elves' soul names, they'd both "see their true selves" (think Tyldak seeing the wolf in Dewshine - it won't allow other elves to read their thoughts or anything like that) and open No-Sting & co up for mental attacks (like Winnowill did to Dewshine in-canon).
My elves all know sharing soul names to be a very vulnerable thing to do (for them) so they'd only do that with close family and, outside of Recognition, people they trust beyond the shadow of a doubt. It's a big taboo in all of their cultures to try to learn someone's soul name against their will and Keleero has some Big Trauma tangled up in the wrong people knowing his soul name.
Opening this thread up to all players to chime in! How do soul names work for your elves? Like for my elves or somehow differently?
