OOC: This takes place a few hours after Exploring the Outside, so it's about mid-day on day 17. Open to all elves who want to go scout for humans~! IC:Mahrak drew water to himself to clean the last of the blood off his hands, grinning at @tambri and Choice. "That's that done!" he said, indicating the carefully taken care of remains of the branch-horn Tambri and he had hunted down, and that Choice had helped drag back to the holt. "I think we're all set to do some scouting, don't you?" Longsleep would wish to stay in the holt and sleep after that ordeal, but seeing as they all stood right outside the entrance to the holt caves that wouldn't be a problem. Mahrak, on the other hand, had never felt less sleepy in his whole life. There was a whole new type of creature out there, a dangerous one, to find and watch! How could he sleep with that prospect awaiting?

Tambri glanced at Mahrak and pursed her lips. She really didn't think it was a good idea to go seeking out the humans, which she felt this scouting mission might turn into, but she did want to ensure that this new little holt she had dropped in on, literally, was safe from them. She glanced at Spook and the wolf trotted up to her, ears perked. His white fur had some red stains from the blood from the branchhorn. He had had a small scrap of meat and seemed quite pleased with himself.
**We should make sure to have someone more familiar with the humans here... to know we don't go too close to them.**

**A good suggestion!** Mahrak readily agreed. He was eager to be on his way, but he had no wish to go in blind. He knew his own skills as a tracker and fighter, and he wished to impress his new tribe, not embarrass himself - though he was also painful curious to see a human with his own eyes. He followed this up with an open-sending of, **Tambri and I are going to make sure no humans have strayed too close to the holt! We could use an elf who knows the forest better than us, so we don't make a wrong step in our scouting. Any takers?** OOC: Thinking I'll throw No-Sting in this thread next posting-turn for me, so we have a "local" helping out. Anyone who wants their elf/elves to join is of course welcome too

Tambri nodded as Mahrak sent the open-send out for a more veteran resident of the mountain to join them on their scouting trip. She still didn't really want to go, not particularly eager to find a human. However, she knew that Mahrak was determined to see one just in how eager he was to go looking. Someone had to look after the cub-brain. Might as well be her. She was curious about him. She'd never met an elf so curious to go after what has been described a known threat. You just... didn't go after known threats! Avoid the bear cave, avoid the humans, avoid the vast-deep... well, that last one was probably her own fear of the never-ending darkness she'd heard about in the deepest of water. Still, avoid it!
She wondered if she should share with him exactly why she was so afraid of humans... No, she had tried sharing once before in the past and she wasn't able to contain the terror she had felt. No one deserved that level of fear if they could be spared from it. Besides, she didn't like others knowing just how terrified she had been. She had a reputation, even if no one here knew it.

No-Sting, still a little sleep-drunk, wandered over toward the source of the sending. She was getting used to sleeping half a day, doing something, and then going back to sleep, and the news of humans nearby had robbed her of all rest. **I'm willing to help you scout,** she sent as she caught Mahrak's sending, already being on her way in their direction. **I heard you'd found an arrow. Did you see tracks as well?**

Mahrak all but grinned as No-Sting showed up. Seemed they were getting ready! **Tambri knows best,** Mahrak sent, doing his best to not bolt off right away. **I don't think I saw any tracks, just the arrow, and it's Tambri who said it was human made.** He held up the arrow in question. It was definitely too large for the average elf to fire - at least the average elf in Mahrak's experience. **I'll follow your lead. From what I understand it, these creatures are dangerous. Seems like a good idea to keep a close eye on them.** And also a very interesting idea!

**Human stench on the arrow. There were no tracks and Spook didn't scent humans nearby. The branch horn may have been struck by the arrow and run. I don't know how far it did run before we found it.** Tambri glanced over at Mahrak then locksent to No-Sting. ~*This one is too eager to see a human... Too excited...*~ She did not like how she could see the excitement in his expression and hear it in his sends. He wanted to leave and he wanted to see the humans up close. He was going to be trouble. Perhaps she will share with him her own experiences with the five-fingers...
**We should go... The sooner we start the sooner we can be sure there are no humans nearby...**

No-Sting frowned, both at the news and at Tambri's sending. She didn't know either of them - Mahrak had only arrived the day before and Tambri was even newer - but it still felt strangely like taking sides when Tambri confided in her about her concerns. She was definitely right; Mahrak had none of the cautious air about him that befitted a scouting mission such as this. But she had no authority over him. Stars, he could be her elder for all she knew! Tambri as well. Or maybe she had seen turns upon turns more than the both of them. High Ones, so many things she'd taken for granted back home had become a headache and a half here.
~**I see what you mean,**~ she quickly lock-sent to Tambri. ~**I doubt we can get him to stay behind though. Better keep an eye on him while he tiers himself out in the woods.**~ The last was only partly a joke. She'd done the similar things for her sister a few times; accompanied her to a solitary part of the clan's territory where she could practice the dangers of magic without the danger of being alone. She would have done her magic anyways, so it seemed better thing that she did it with possible help nearby.
**I agree,** No-Sting replied openly, pretending that her time spent lock-sending to Tambri had been time spent thinking over the scounting mission. **I have some idea in which direction they make their den, but I've not been close enough myself to see more than tracks of them. Might be good for all of us if we can be sure exactly where they live. Few of us have dared approach the five-fingers' territory."

Mahrak smiled with excitement and patted Longsleep on the flank. **Agreed!** He gave his bond a shove. "Off to sleep, you big lump of ice. I'll be back before you know it." He could tell something had been exchanged between Tambri and No-Sting - either just looks or actual sendings - but he didn't let that bother him. If his manners got on their nerves they could confront him about it or let it rankle them; either way would be entertaining, in his eyes. OOC: Shall we timejump for a bit, to when they've gotten back to where they felled the elk? We can stay in the same thread, just move things along a little in time

Tambri was relieved that No-Sting seemed to agree to watch Mahrak. She was completely startled by the suggestion of finding out exactly where the humans are, her eyes widening, shaking her head. **Have you been in the Dreamberry bush!? Find where the humans are!? Knowing they aren't here should be enough! Why go poke a sleeping bear in its den!?** She knew in the back of her mind that knowing exactly where the humans made camp was a wise choice, to be able to determine their territory and range, but it unsettled her all the same. Reluctantly she continued to follow, leading back to where they'd downed the branchhorn. It was easy to follow the scent, with Spook leading on.
OOC: Sure. timejump sounds fine

OOC: Timejump it is!
IC: The walk to where Mahrak and Tambri had felled the branch-horn took a while. No-Sting kept quite on the way there, only sharing sendings now and then to make sure they were on the right path. Despite his seeming eagerness to seek out the humans, Mahrak had used his magic well to cover their trail. Back-tracking would have been a challenge, if Tambri and Mahrak hadn't been there to lead her.
**So, this is it?** she asked when they finally came to a halt.

Mahrak nodded in answer to No-Sting's question. **Yes, this is where the beast fell. Not sure how far it ran before it reached us. What do you think, Tambri? You're the human expert here.**
He sent a wide grin Tambri's way, as excited now as he'd been at the start of their trek back into the woods. He kept in the shadows of the trees, but his whole body thrummed with the desire to go further, to start seeking out these mysterious five-fingers.

**The only expertise I have is avoiding them. They want to kill us, we want to survive. There is nothing more to learn from them.** She hated how she could smell the excitement from the male. He was too eager. Too... fever-brained! **This is where it fell, but I don't see any blood or tracks from here.** Even still, the wolf was sniffing around, searching for the trail. The snow was trampled so much that it made for a difficult search to know where the branch-horn had come from.
**You need to understand the danger. I don't think you do.** She sent a glare at Mahrak. **You are too excited to see the five-fingers. I hope to the High Ones you never do.**

No-Sting couldn't help but agree with Tambri - Mahrak was definitely far too happy to be tracking such dangerous 'game'. But on the other hand...
**I agree that we should not take this lightly. But in my experience, knowing where the bear trails are will help you avoid them. The humans have clearly already begun to travel nearer to our holt. We need to know their paths to know where we shouldn't go. Agreed?**

Mahrak managed not to roll his eyes at Tambri and No-Sting's overly cautious sendings, but only just. **I'm not a kitten, you worrywarts. There are plenty of terrible and dangerous things in the world, other than these 'humans', and I've survived yet. Don't think I'll go bolting straight for them. I'll admit I'm very curious to see them, but I'm not looking to fight one.**
He meant to go on, but a thought struck him that made him change what he'd intended to go on with: **Among your people, how do you teach the young to deal with dangers? Do you just tell them they exist and then that they should avoid them?** He was genuinely curious. To him, it seemed obvious that he should seek out the danger along with an experienced elf to help him understand it, while doing his best not to get himself killed or injured during the lesson. But maybe that wasn't how it was done in all elf tribes?
