OoC: Day 30 after first ones' arrival, 14 days after Eryk appeared to the Beacon Room.
~*~
With healer's help and toughness and determination, Eryk had gotten much better. Of course, his natural state and personality prevented him to lie down for too long, so eventually the carpenter had picked up little chores to do. He had built himself a pair of skis, to aid him roam outside in the snow; and that was what he was doing now.
*Skiing again...*, Eryk thought, as he slowly trudged his way through the snow. Heavy pine and spruce trees towered over him, as he listened to the silence of the forest, the silence broken only every now and then by falling clump of snow or a tittering of a small bird nearby. The carpenter noticed that the forest brought him peace, he was not able to find any place else. The vigorous activity had brought him the sleep he was not able to get in any other way. Otherwise his thoughts had been occupied by the folks at home.
*They will think me dead.*, he pondered, *but there is no body to burn on a pyre.* He sighed softly, as he watched the halls that the trees formed above his head. It felt comfortable to the carpenter, and it made him wonder if his ancestors had done the same when they had faced bad times. Of course, the ski trip also had a little bit more purposes than the meditative side.
Eryk had kept his eyes peeled for elk tracks. Once he would had a steed, things would be easier. He would also need the strength of a big animal later, to drag logs of wood to someplace -- he was not still sure where. *I simply can't live in a cave.* he thought, suppressing a little shudder. He did not wish to think ill of the folks who lived in the cave complex, but it really was not a life for him. The carpenter wanted a lodge or a cabin -- not too far from the rest of the ragtag group that now formed his tribe. *Time goes by so slowly now. I wonder if that was the same for my ancestors. Would they have liked it here?* he pondered again, his thoughts returning to the primal days.
On a top of a small hill, he stopped and leaned on his ski stick -- other hand held a spear, for protection. He looked down to the bottom of the hill, where some elves were playing. They were so... different from the tribemates he had used to. So colorful, with many different backgrounds. Not many fighters or warriors walked among them. There was some sort of snow play going on.
*Time goes slowly.*, he thought again, and noticed a smile on his face. It was not wide or particularly bright... But it was the first time in ages when he noticed himself able to smile. *But the times change quickly. I suppose I can live with that.*

OOC: Sorry for very slow reply - the holidays and January were...not so relaxing for me. Trying my hand at having fun on the Internet again from now on Assuming it's daytime, since Eryk is diurnal? IC:Choice breathed hot air on his gloved hands. It didn't help much, but it felt better than letting them hang at his sides. Despite many days spent here in this land of cold he'd still not gotten used to it. He'd headed out near the end of the night, hoping that the approaching dawn would bring more warmth. No such luck. He was chilled to the core, despite his new warm clothing. Dance and Sneak didn't seem to be doing much better; they'd found one half-starved ravvit and irritated by the constant cold they'd eaten it before Choice could stop them. They had only bloody bones to bring back to the Holt. ::Back home soon,:: Choice sent to Dance, knowing his bond would share with his mate Sneak in his own way. In the distance he could hear tribemates at play - he tasted the word briefly, since it made him so very happy - but there was another sound as well that he couldn't pinpoint. It sounded like something was sliding over the snow. Very strange! **Someone there?** Choice open-sent, hoping it was a fellow elf he'd stumbled upon. Sounds here in the snow covered lands were so different from his old home - prey he could find, but telling friend from predator wasn't always as clear.

OoC: Daytime is correct!
~*~
**It's just me.** Eryk responded, when the dark-skinned elf's sending reached him. He turned to the direction of the sending, sliding on the snow, finding a small downhill to aid his travel. Finally, he spotted Choice around -- frankly, he was not that easy to miss, not around snow.
"Hoi, I went to check out the surroundings for elk tracks." he then said, greeting Choice and his bonds with a wave of his gloved hand -- the one that was not holding the ski stick. The skis had made trudging in the snow far easier, even though he was breathing heavily, his breath puffing in the cold air.

"Elk tracks?" Choice asked, smiling and approaching Eryk with caution. There had been plenty of exchanged information among the elves, so Choice had some idea of what an 'elk' was, though he'd yet to see one for himself. He'd heard Eryk talk about them before, remembered that Eryk didn't wish to hunt them, but he'd not quite wrapped his head around the concept of "bonding" with an animal one didn't share blood with - not even after seeing Jaseio and Edgerunner with their horses. At least he thought he'd understood right that Eryk didn't have elk blood... "Did you find any?" Choice asked, scratching Dance behind the ears. "And are the skis helping?" He'd seen Eryk working on the things, and heard him describe their purpose, but seeing them being used gave him no clear picture of what they were good for. They looked rather encumbering. OOC: Since we're not sure who's active at the moment, would you like No-Sting and Badger to be the elves playing near the Holt? I could definitely see No-Sting spending some daylight time having fun instead of sleeping

OoC: I think Badger and No-Sting certainly could spend some daytime out.
~*~
Eryk shook his head lightly. "Not much tracks around. I found some old ones, so I will need to check again." He noticed Choice looking at his skis and an idea formed in Eryk's head.
"Would you like to try?", he asked, sticking the stick and the spear in the snow and removing his gloves. It was easier to loosen the straps with bare hands.
"Skiing is a relaxing thing, it makes traveling in the snow much easier compared to walking.", he complimented. "I am also planning to make myself a sled for dragging things in the snow, AND a pair of skates for gliding on ice."

"Oh!" Choice exclaimed, both shocked and pleased by the offer. He knew he shouldn't be suprised by kindness from his fellow elves, but less than a moon turn's worth of friendly interaction hadn't completely erased a near lifetime of being shunned by his kin. "I-I'm not sure I'll know what to do, but I'd love to try!" Dance gave a whine, joined by an annoyed look from Sneak as Choice approached Eryk. Choice chuckled and sent a ::Go home:: to Dance, who did so without delay, followed by Sneak. This done Choice returned his attention to Eryk. "How do I do this?" he asked, eyeing the skis and stick with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. "Also, what are skates?" Finding out what ice and sleds were hadn't taken him long now that these were his everyday surroundings, but he hadn't heard anyone mention skates before. Spotting No-Sting and Badger in the not so far distance Choice gave a wave to them. They seemed busy with a game of some sort.

Eryk removed the skis from his feet and stepped on the snow with his boots. "Step on the skis, I'll help you to strap them on.", the carpenter nudged the dark-skinned lad and gave him a smile. "We'll see how to continue from that." He waited as Choice stepped on the skis and strapped his feet on them.
"Oh, skates?", he then said, "They are... a kind of bone blades one straps on feet to glide on ice.", he explained. Skates were better on ice than skis, and on the other hand, the skis were better on snow. He looked at Choice and squinted his eyes a little. If the dark-skinned elf wanted to blend in the snow, he'd better get a white cloak or something.
He walked to the other side of the lad and strapped his other foot on the ski. "There we go, good to ski!", he told the lad and clapped him on the back. "Just grab the stick and the spear, they should help you move."

Choice carefully stepped onto the skis, his heart skipping a beat as Eryk began to tie them to his feet. It reminded him too much of getting stuck with a foot in a burrow while fleeing predators. But not fully; it was merely the lessening of movement that triggered that reflex of panic. Choice pushed it down and gave Eryk a bright smile.
"Skates sound fascinating!" he said, wholly genuine in his enthusiasm. "Could you send me an image? Or send to me how I'm suppose to...start skiing? I must confess I have not the faintest idea of how to start!" He laughed a little at himself, delighted at being here, in this strange land, having such a friendly and interesting conversation. The loss of Nettle and their cub still gnawed at the back of his mind, but it couldn't burn away the joy of being welcomed in a holt after so, so long.

"Even better, I can lend you mine, if I manage to make some skates.", Eryk said. The dark-skinned lad seemed genuinely curious about the winter activities, and Eryk noticed he felt... glad? It had not been often that others shared his interests to the outdoor activities, back at his old home or this new one, so it was refreshing to have someone interested around.
"Let's concentrate on skiing for now.", he suggested and took a step back as soon as he had finished fastening Choice's feet on the skis. He formed a sending link with the dark-skinned elf and started to show how to move with the skis in the snow. It probably was heavy form of moving for a first try, but it would be eventually easy in the deep snow -- especially considering walking in such a snow.

Eryk - do you want to continue this after you're back from hiatus or should I archive it? I'm up for either

OoC: We can continue this one. My posts will be short and useless, but hoping to grow them up with time.

OOC: Looking forward to continuing! But I don't think any rp posts can be "useless" - post whatever fits and is fun for you, no stress IC:"Can't wait so see them! Are there any certain kind of animal bones that work best for making them? So I can make sure to save you some if I'm lucky while out hunting." Choice clung to Eryk's sending-shared experience of skiing, slowly edging his way forward. The start was slow but bit by bit he gained speed. "I think I've got the hang ooooooof-" The ground had begun to tilt downward, down toward where No-Sting and Badger played, and before Choice could fully brace for it, he was heading downhill. "Look out!"

"Just... Long enough.", Eryk said when he was asked about the bones, and he showed the length with his hands -- almost any leg bone of a decent-sized creature would do.
He urged the dark-skinned lad with the skis, and followed him slowly -- especially slowly now that he did not have the skis and Choice had them strapped. Aaaaaand then the dark-skinned lad was heading downhill, just slipping out of Eryk's reach.
"Whoops.", Eryk uttered, and made a face as the other elf slid down the hill.
"Bend your knees!", he shouted after Choice, running after him, "Turn your toes inside, no, TOES!!" He was not sure if his instructions were heard or made any sense, even, and he tried to show in sending how to slow down in downhill, but his head was already hurting. "Guts and fins!", he cursed, not being able to catch the other, who had the speed of the skis on his side. Eryk trudged in the deep snow now way behind.

At the base of the hill, Badger had had a snowfight with No-Sting, but now they had concentrated on snow sculptures -- or rather, building a snow fort for later use. "I mean, we could make a surprise attack on Juniper and Keleero, and then duck behind this snow wall...", Badger explained her master plan to the tuft-eared maiden, but then she heard a shout of 'look out!'. She looked up at the others on the hill top; or rather, one was sliding down the hill, with alarming speed. It was Eryk and Choice, both of them had waved a greeting earlier, but now the other was heading toward them. Badger acted in a heartbeat, jumping on No-Sting to push them both out of Choice's way. She landed on the top of the other maiden.

No-Sting, out of breath from the snowfight, nodded along to Badger's plan. She took a moment to bask in Badger's presence and attention. It had been far too long since she let herself have fun like this - setting up this place to be a worthy of the word 'Holt' had taken much hard work - so she focused on enjoying every heartbeat of this lovely day and such lovely company.
"I can't wait to see the look on Keleero's face when-"
No-Sting gave an undignified squawk as Badger dove for her, sprawling on her back with no trace of elegance. Snow flew everywhere and a shriek to match her own whistled past, but No-Sting paid little attention to that. She'd ended up with Badger right on top of her. While the snow sneaking its way into the hood of her clothes wasn't pleasant, she couldn't complain about this outcome.
"What a rescue," No-Sting grinned up at Badger, making no move to get up.
