OOC: That's fine with me, just let us know if academia eats you up again so we can soldier on. I'm gonna do one little piece of business first, but then after that, lead on! Greywing followed after Swift-Wind and Silverthorn, almost wishing she had a wolf-friend to ride on...thankfully, the easy lope No-Tail sprang into was not difficult to keep up with. It felt strange to be tracking like this in a group; the pack structure was non-existent, and her companions unknown. Swift-Wind...that was her name, right?...had said very little in the circle, but she seemed nice enough. She trusted everyone as much as she could for only having known them for what, half a night? For a time, the forest was clear. No sign of humans, traps, not much in terms of game...it was the whitecold, perhaps they'd all settled in for their long sleep. Or was this truly the whitecold? Perhaps there was some even colder season coming. Greywing shivered a little and kept moving...then something shiny caught her eye. **Wait!** she sent, stopping dead in her tracks. She peered at the round, shiny object...like a very polished stone. She wondered if it was just the moonslight glinting off it, or if there was some sort of oil on it to make it shine so. Greywing took a small pebble from her sling pouch and tossed it at the thing. Nothing happened. Gingerly, she stepped forward and poked it a couple times...then picked it up. She peered at it more closely. **It's a...I don't know what it is. The way it tapers here, then comes to a point...and these two circles on either side, it looks like my falcon. I suppose it's some sort of...head gear.** She furrowed her brow and put it on; the back squished the tails of her hair against her head, but it fit well otherwise. She took it off again and looked at it. **We've seen humans wearing wolf heads and pelt capes, but...nothing like this. It looks...unnatural.** OOC: it's Vareesi's helmet, and Greywing has never encountered refined metal before.

Swift-Wind felt happy that her proposition was accepted, though she noticed it was not happily so by all. Or am I imagining things? she thought.
She did not have time to dwell on it, as Greywing had found an object, she did not seem familiar with. Swift-Wind took a few steps closer to have a look. She immediatly recognized the object. **It is a helmet** she stated, quite confounded at Greywing's lack of knowledge. **You use it to protect your head, when fighting, or when hunting sometimes** she enlightened whomever was willing to listen. "It kind of looks like the one Vareesi wore when she got here", she said loudly, and more to herself she said: "though I can't be sure, best ask my sister".
So to better get a grip on the situation and to have the helmet confirmed as Vareesi's she lock-sent to her sister. ~**No-Sting, we found this whilst out scouting, so now I need your help. Can you tell me if this is Vareesi's helmet? And if so do you know where she is? Because seeing this sort of makes me anxious.**~

Swift-Wind's sending caught No-Sting by surprise. She recognized the thing in Swift-Wind was watching all right. ~**That is her helmet for sure. Goldenbraid returned not five heartbeats ago and she said Vareesi stayed in the woods to hunt alone. Something must have happened to her! Is there blood?**~

Swift-Wind was unnerved by the reply she got from No-Sting. If Goldenbraid was back without Vareesi something had happened for sure. But what? she thought to herself. She had not seen any blood, but then again, she hadn't looked for it. She told her sister just that. ~**I haven't noticed any blood on it, though I never really thought of or got a chance to examine it closer.**~ she lock-sent to her sister.
Ooc: Should there be blood on the helmet?

OOC: Vareesi vanished back to her home, so there is no need for blood on the helmet And our elves of course have bo idea what's become of Vareesi, so you're free to have them suspect anything and everything for taking Vareesi - the humans for example

OOC: Sorry for the late reply. Been busy for awhile dealing the with the xmas holiday rush. Back now sorta.
IC:
Slinker dug his knees in, nearly losing his balance, when Ash suddenly shifted beneath him. He was surprised when the wolf dropped his nose to the ground. The sound of intent sniffing, typical of wolves, filled his ears as Ash circled left and right over the ground. Slinker was taken along for the ride when Ash followed the intermingling scents until he loped within a hairs-breadth of Swift-Wind. The wolf bared his teeth and growled ominously, ears flicking left and right as he circled back, continuing to follow Vareesi's scent-spore.
Slinker frowned when Ash banked left, loping agilely as he turned around Swift-Wind again. He came to a stop on the opposite side, head up, ears perked, swivelling left and right.
::What is it, Ash?::, bondsent Slinker.
The wolf snapped his teeth agitatedly. ::Scent disappears. Gone. No left or right or beyond. Just gone. No blood or flight or fear. Gone::.
The furrow between Slinker's brows deepened as he relayed the message to the others. **My bond says that the one who wore that helmet is simple gone. Their scent disappears. Gone like a snuffed out candle-flame. It worries him**. Slinker glanced suspiciously around them, eyes keen to the slightest movement as he scrutinised the very trees.
**It worries me too. If an elf can appear out of thin air. Perhaps they can disappear too**.

OOC: I know how it is. There's a lot to do x-mas times. Been working my ass off lately. But good you're back now IC: Swift-Wind jumped, startled by having the animal so close to her. Not knowing if it was friendly or not. Soon enough she realised it was not her it had a problem with, but the helmet. Slinker's word confirmed it. But what did he mean, just disappeared? she thought. **Are you saying that there is no trace of her? That can't be, can it?** Swift-Wind responded to all.

Slinker shrugged his shoulders. He looked to Swift-Wind, expression solemn. **The scent ends here, Swift-Wind. There is no other trail. Nothing else to find. Ash can't track something he can't smell, see, or hear**.
Ash whined plaintively. His shaggy head turned to Swift-Wind. He regarded her sadly, ears and tail drooping as if to convey an apology.
Slinker sighed sympathetically as he patted Ash's ruff. **A scent fades with time. It doesn't simply disappear unless it is covered by another scent, or smothered by snow, or washed out by rain**. Slinker shook his head confusedly. **I don't know what has happened Swift-Wind. My bond is confused. I am too. Whatever did happen, by the Highones, it is mighty strange**.

**As if this is the first strange thing to happen in this strange place,** Greywing said, keeping a firm hold on the helmet. She found it, and the owner was gone, so now it was hers. Finders, keepers. She placed the cool metal on her head; it had a leather lining, and it accommodated her three tails of hair quite well. Nothing else held it in place, and she shook her head a little; it stayed well enough, but she put in the back of her mind a reminder to add a leather strap, if possible.
**We should continue,** the youngest elf continued, wrapping and unwrapping her sling strap around her fingers. She was antsy and wanted to leave this behind. She didn't want to go back to her old home, and if this odd elf hadn't gone back to hers, then standing here smelling a scent that disappeared would do her no good.

Awaiting an answer from Goldenbraid, No-Sting took the time to reply to Swift-Wind: ~**I trust you scouts to find out what has happened to Vareesi. We'll send to you if she comes back to the caves.**~

**I agree, let's move on,** Panaetha sent, urging the scouts. **If she disappeared and somehow...got back to where she came from, we can do nothing. But if she was captured by these humans or High Ones know what, then we are wasting time.** She knew that it was likely the former; as Slinker had pointed out, her scent disappeared. If her fellow glider had been taken, her scent would have continued, but it didn't. But she hoped that the unlikely possibility of Vareesi being captured would spur the scouts into action instead of lingering here, hand-wringing.
Panaetha had to admit though, that the possibility of disappearing back to her own lands lingered in the back of her mind. However, that was her goal. Was Vareesi randomly taken, as they'd all randomly arrived, or had she figured out a way to get home? If it was random, then nothing the healer could do would speed up, slow down, or guarantee the process...if it was a piece of information Vareesi had discovered, Panaetha had yet to discover it herself. Though she wanted to get home, she couldn't leave the rest of the scouts out here alone. They'd continue exploring and ensure that the glider hadn't been captured, then Panaetha would do her own exploring. She was still committed to helping these elves settle in this strange new land...but she wouldn't stay a tail's twitch longer than necessary.

Slinker sighed though he offered no protest. He gripped a handful of Ash's ruff, bent his knees, and leapt astride the wolf's broad shoulders. He patted Ash's neck when the wolf whined plaintively.
::Leave it my brother::, he wolf-sent soothingly. ::Wherever she is gone. We cannot follow. Come. The healer speaks truly. We must go::.
Ash whined again when Slinker gently squeezed his thighs together. The gentle urging sent the wolf loping away towards the rear of the party again. He settled readily back into file, ears pricked forward and alert, as he awaited further instruction.
Slinker himself, nodded at Panaetha's suggestion, and waited for their party to move onward.

OOC: Joan has let me know that she's insanely busy, so we can skip Silverthorn until she's back. He'll tag along in the background until then.
