Time: Day 100 SFA, dusk Participants: Eryk, TambriThread Summary: TBA ~*~ The cabin construction had moved onward; Eryk and FarSight have gotten some plans down on the size of the place, and stonework had been completed. This day had been spent felling trees, but as the sun had crept closer to the horizon, Eryk had sent his 'little brother' and Frostbite back toward the Beacon's cave. He had promised to follow soon after, just wanting to get some good looking trunks down -- they could haul log the next day, and they would get some good support structure built up. Eryk still had some energy in him -- or rather, memories he wanted to avoid a little harder than usual. He had once again removed his coat and shirt, lumber work was hard and sweaty work. He moved onward to the forest, looking for the certain trees that they had marked earlier for felling. As soon as he found one, the ax got to work. This was not a particularly thick pine tree, so Eryk got it chopped down rather quick. Now, what did they shout to warn others about trees crashing down...? The grey-haired carpenter snapped his fingers and yelled: "TIMBERRR!", before he pushed the hacked tree down. It was better to warn any possible tribemates, just in case. He did not wish to face the fellow Beacon's called ones and say he flattened a tribemate beneath a pine tree. Eryk moved onward to the next marked tree, got to chopping. "TIMBER!", he shouted once again the warning before the tree fell down.

Tambri had been lounging under a tree with Spook curled up as her pillow. She had known the white-haired elf was nearby mostly because of his scent but also the noise. He wasn't a silent one when it came to his work. She knew he was chopping down trees and she was waiting for him to do just that before she went to "heal" the cut trees and urge them to regrow. It was tiring work and she often found herself making a temporary den in the woods to sleep in and recover.
The shout had startled her, however. He hadn't done that before. Did he notice the regrowth? It wasn't like she hid the trees and the new saplings... she opened her eyes and looked in the direction of the shout just as Spook stood, promptly causing her to fall back to the ground with a soft thud.
"Thickskull..." she muttered to the wolf. "Could have waited..."
She pushed herself up fully and brushed herself off before heading in the direction of the shouts. She was mindful of where she heard the telltale snap of falling trees so she didn't end up in the path of one.
Once she got to where he was chopping trees, she folded her arms across her chest and arched a brow, watching the shirtless elf working.
She wanted to say something but her usual quiet nature kept her silent. Granted she would have sent to the elf but many here didn't like sending. Was he one of the ones that didn't send well? She honestly didn't know.
**Try to have them fall in the same place... fewer trees get damaged.**
She didn't need to explain she... felt? Heard? She knew when the trees felt pain, when something damaged them severely... it was hard to explain how.

Another tree fell down with an impressive crash, and Eryk was about to jump on it to start removing twigs and branches. The sending startled him and made him stop, though. Instinctively, he turned toward the direction of the sending, his hand clenching on the ax, just in case the intruder was malicious.
As it was the other treeshaper of the ragtag group, the carpenter relaxed, but just a little. “Trees fall where they fall, was it a storm or me.”, he said, maybe a little gruffly, as he had been interrupted.
She’s cute., was his first thought, at which he paused. Eryk clenched the hand around the ax handle again, as the second thoughts came in: Oh no.
Now that he had paused the work, and the warm spring evening made things grow and bloom, he could not evade the memories he rather had forgotten. Eryk’s loneliness had grown a lot during the times in the vicinity of the Beacon, and now that he had paused to think, he …
His romantic track record was not the ideal one. If he ever had had a crush on someone, they opted toward someone else more handsome or otherwise capable. If he had managed to thaw someone’s heart, they had stopped visiting or an accident had taken them away. Or sometimes, simply, he was beaten to the punch. Eryk simply was not the kind people picked, and he tried to push the loneliness and hurt away.
He decided to suppress and suffocate the feeling of whatever had made him think she was cute. The carpenter was well aware that the world did not owe him anything, least of all companionship.
“I’ll chop down just a couple of more and do more detailed work tomorrow.”, he then promised to the wolfrider. “With ropes and giving direction, and so on.”

**Truth, they fall where they fall, but you don't have to hear the scream.** Tambri sighed and moved to the remaining stump, placing her hand on it. **Or feel it... It's hard to explain.** She felt the warmth from the tree, its pain at being cut. She closed her eyes and focused on the stump. She could feel the roots in the earth. This tree had rooted deep. It would have towered above the others, and wouldn't have been felled in a storm. As she continued to focus, a few budding branches appeared. One out the side, the other near the center of the stump where the tree had splintered when the top fell. The stump itself seemed to weather as the nutrients were moved into the small new-growths. Then another sapling sprouted a foot or so away from the stump. Still small and it would take a long time to grow, but it was clearly from the roots of the same tree.
Tambri gasped and let go of the stump and shook her head. **The roots... were deep... Harder to urge them to grow.**

Eryk was not at all magically inclined, so he did not see the glow or feel the magic happening. Yet, he kept his blue gaze on the wolfrider with keen interest, maybe a little more keen than what was necessary. As much as he tried to understand the explanation of pain, he did not. Other than of those who walked and talked.
“Well, a root rot could have stricken.”, he then said, “or fungus, bugs or a skyfire bolt.” He then said, “then woodpeckers after the bugs, more fungi, until the tree dries or rots. And that’s why they drop their seeds, and eventually fall and die. To make room for new saplings and growth.”
Seemingly, that was what Tambri was trying to urge with her magic, as new twigs emerged. Eryk scoffed lightly at the effort the other made for the thing that happened naturally — but he also realised that others like Danik would have had a gentler approach.
“It’s not like I hurt them for fun.”, he then defended himself, “not all of us are magically gifted, or fit to live in dens and caves. I need to build shelter, I need structure, and the logs will provide that.” Not to mention warmth of the fire, but he did not say that out loud.

Tambri shook her head. That was not what was happening but he didn't understand. Most didn't, to be fair. She sighed and turned to face Eryk once more.
**No, this tree was healthy... and I'm not saying you do this for fun. I understand the purpose. I only asked that you try to make them fall in roughly the same place. The forest will remain stronger that way.**
Part ofnher felt like him getting defensive was for no reason. She'd only asked him to try and minimalize the damage but whatever he thought she meant by it...
**I'll leave you to it...**

“And I said, I will. Tomorrow.”, Eryk said with a huff. There seemed to be a clash of cultures going on, but he really wanted to get back to work — and take a dip. Preferably in the cold spring river, not in the cave’s hot springs. He needed the cold to cool down his feelings. For some reason this maiden made him feel hot and bothered.
“Look, I’m sorry I am hurting the forest. I promise it will be over before you know it. But meanwhile, I suggest you reside in some other part, because these pines are the best for my log cabin.”, the carpenter then explained and wondered if it had been just Tambri urging new growth after him, or did Juniper also have his mitts in the process. At least the older wolfrider male did not come yapping around and tell Eryk how to do his job.
“Then I will have to build a shed for firewood, round pole fences, shelter for Asi, barn for hay in the winter.”, Eryk listed his plans, “that means a lot of log, and I mean A LOT.”
Well, maybe the felling of the trees was not over too soon, coming to think of it. “You’re always welcome to come see how the logs are used by non-magic elf.”, he then invited the wolfrider to visit. Haha, fat chance. As if. Yeah right.
“I’ll take back the promise, building will be over later than sooner, I guess.”, he then said truthfully.

Why was he getting so defensive!? Tambri shook her head as she moved to another stump to repeat the process.
**I am not telling you to stop cutting down trees. I know and understand their use. I know you aren't clearing the forest to get rid of the trees but that you are actively working. I also know you are cutting only a few in a given area before moving on. I'm only asking... nevermind you won't understand.** Her frustration was easily felt and the wolf whimpered but otherwise kept near her side.
She couldn't explain what she felt when the trees were damaged. She didn't understand it much herself. She had to learn treeshaping all on her own. She didn't have a mentor. And she had come into it while being chased by humans, only hours after most of her tribe were slaughtered.
Which was why she was outside. Milo made her remember. She knew it wasn't his fault he had human blood. She knew he wasn't responsible. But the memories had been tucked away so carefully she was able to mostly forget them. Mostly.
After the third stump began to sprout Tambri turned to make her way to the fourth before she swayed slightly on her feet. There was a glisten of sweat on her brow as well. After a moment she made her way to the fourth stump and so far the last by what she could remember from his calls.
"Spook..." she said the wolf's name quietly. He'd get her back to the caves and she could sleep.
The fourth began to show signs of sprouting but Tambri was beginning to tremble from strain.

The sending and the frustration within were making Eryk’s head ache — but considering his weird feelings inside, it was a welcomed change. Silently he watched as the other swayed onward, clearly struggling to continue.
The carpenter tutted his tongue.
“Ain’t you wolfriders an odd bunch.”, he said with a low tone and approached the maiden, still keeping at least two arms length of a distance.
“I am trying to say, that I will be felling trees for a while, and that you might be more comfortable elsewhere while it is done.”, he suggested, “you see, I don’t know this fancy-schmancy magic like you lot do, but makes sense that you don’t feel the pain when you are … someplace else.”
He looked at the light-coated wolf and pondered IF it knew the way back to the cave complex. Surely it did? “I think I’d better walk you back to the caves, you might end up in a bear’s den otherwise, or human village, or troll trap.”
Not that Eryk knew it there was troll traps — at this point he might expect about anything.

**I prefer it out here... I dont much like closed in spaces... I need room to move and breathe and definitely need to see the sky...** there was a hint of fear in her sending. It wasn't only that she didn't -like- closed in spaces... she was afraid of them. She swayed again and glanced to him as he mentioned walking her back.
**No... it's too early to go back...** Now she was fighting it. She tried to be comfortable in the caves and realistically only the common room was open enough for her. Her small cave den was a place to sleep, which she didn't easily do. If she wasn't asleep she didn't want to be in there.
**I need a den... but... I can't shape a tree to make one... these trees are too small. They don't get wide enough... and it would be too obvious to outsiders if they stumbled onto it...**
The wolf whimpered again but he was keeping his distance from the male elf. Still close to his bond, but he wasn't sure what was wrong with her so he was trusting this male elf to help. The elves here were all elf-friends to him. Tambri had made it clear that he was not in charge around them.

Eryk took the battering of the sending with silent acceptance. Then, he sighed and whacked the ax on a tree stump, retrieving his coat from a branch next.
“Ask Juniper for a den.”, he suggested as he wore the coat over himself, and could not help but to imagine the two treeshapers together, huddled close to inspect and learn about the local flora, finding kinship and what had you. He pulled the ax off the stump and swung it over his shoulder, trying to push the misery and lack of connection away.
“You are clearly exhausting yourself. Come on, I’ll walk you to the caves. You don’t have to go inside, especially if the weather is nice, but someone ought to look after you.”, he said to Tambri, motioning her and her wolf to follow.
Of course, he could have easily built some sort of shelter for the wolfrider maiden, but seeing how she reacted to him getting the raw materials, the carpenter had his doubts of her being comfortable in a tree house or some such. Oh well, he might as well build a platform in one of the trees, until he got the watch tower started…

"Juniper is far too grumpy..." the rare use of her voice hinted at the growing headache she herself was developing. She stumbled along with him. "I really don't mind that you cut down trees. I've lived with GoBacks before... and their lodges are spacious but... too dark. I need windows... the sky... space... I can't be closed in..."
The wolf whimpered but followed along. He was a small built wolf, clearly still quite young, though he was large enough to ride if necessary. Tambri reached out a hand to the wolf's back as if she was going to climb up but instead her hand just came to rest amidst the white fur.

“I dunno, he seems to have mellowed out since Greywing and others disappeared. Dunno what’s up with that, though.”, Eryk commented, but could not provide details, since he had really not been interested of the intertribal conflicts and other unnecessary things. The speech was a welcome change and the carpenter sighed in relief.
Although, it seemed like Tambri had over-exerted herself; he stopped and watched the maiden going to the wolf, but … not climbing on it to ride? He watched, then cocked his head to the side as if to say ‘well?’
“Huh.”, he breathed out loud at the scene. Then looked at the wolf, then at the maiden. “You gonna carry her, if I pull her on your back or?”, he asked the wolf, although Eryk had his suspicions that the wolf heard only “uuu ooaa aeeyyy hh” and understood speech even less, unless he said ‘food’. He knew that Wolfriders had a better bond and some way of communicating with their bonds, but he had a hunch that the wolves back at home understood the word ‘treat’ for certain.
“Hey, Tambri, want me to push you on wolfback or should I carry you?”, he then asked the maiden.

The disappearances had been a shock to everyone, even herself despite being new. The uncertainty was felt by all. She sighed softly as Eryk continued talking before she carefully climbed onto Spook's back with Eryk's assistance.
The wolf whimpered and looked to Eryk before chuffing at him. He seemed to be waiting to be told where to go whether by Eryk or Tambri. He didn't understand what was wrong with the elfess.
Finally they started moving at a steady pace with Tambri repeating how she'd be fine the more she found herself drifting towards Eryk slightly.
**I'm sorry... I've been doing more shaping than I'm used to...**
She was legitimately apologetic and felt that she was bothering him and keeping him from his work.

And here came the bombardment of sending again, and Eryk’s lips formed a tight line, but he noticed himself appreciate the genuine apology within the sending.
“Don’t worry about it, I worked all day and this was just… overtime… to avoid, hm, stuff.”, he responded to the sending, unsure if he cared to dig any deeper into it.
Eventually, the carpenter decided to open up a bit, “I have been a little lonely lately, working all day and then some gives me something else to think about.” He had made some friends, yes, but he could not help but miss his old friends and … well, there was other things. He felt like he would not have time to take a dip in the river, so he sighed deep.
