Tribe name: Northern Call Holt
Leadership: Chieftess - Hereditary (Icefox)
Type of elves: Wolfriders only.
Soul Names: All have them, some go on a quest to find it, others just know it.
Use-Name: All descriptive.
Random Info: The Northern Call elves are slightly shorter than average wolfriders, usually no taller than about 3'6", tend to have darker skin. Their bonds are large tundra wolves (think dire wolves in size, most elves are eye level with the wolf shoulder, to shoulder-shoulder.). Most of the wolves are white/grey in color.
Recognition: Required for cubs. In rare occasions a cub from non-recognition occurs.
Location: North Arctic region. About 20 miles, or one day's ride, south is a dense forest that spans from the base of a jagged mountain partway up the slopes. The tribe lives on the southern edge of a cove, the northern edge is the edge of a glacier. West is a barren tundra. Southwest is a deep canyon, a scar in the landscape. Farther west across the tundra is a more sparsely wooded tundra where the humans herd caribou-like animals. East is the Vast Deep.
Culture: The region of the arctic doesn't allow for much of a new-green. The sea to the east of the holt is cold water, filled with icebergs, more ice in the winter months when the sun doesn't rise at all. During the summer, with the very limited sunlight hours, whaling and sealing are done in attempts to get enough meat to feed the tribe. The cove has slightly warmer water, warm enough that regular fishing with nets and spears can be done year-round, though the water remains below freezing temperatures. A small colony of seals calls the cove home year-round due to the warmth, though in the winter months, hunting these seals is not common so as not to damage the health of the colony.
The Holt itself consists of four small igloo/yurt style mounds that act as entrances/exits to the actual holt which is underground. Entering one of the above-ground entrances will place the individual in a small room where snares and other hunting tools tend to be kept. Descending down from the entrance rooms into the large, underground gathering room. There's a large fire pit in the center of the room, the smoke filtering through small crevices in the ceiling formed by rockshapers many years earlier. The vents are small and positioned so that the rooms below ground are dry, there's a constant draft of fresh air the is pulled throughout the holt, though the air is warmed by the small fires and torches that are placed throughout.
Lining the outer wall of the large gathering room are small corridors that lead to dens, save for two tunnels on opposite sides of the room, both curving downward to a large chamber beneath the gathering room. The true source of the heat of the cove lies here. A large underground river flows from west to east, culminating in this chamber where it cascades down a small waterfall into individual thermal pools. The water is heated, the air is humid. The elves are aware that they are living on the edge of a dormant volcano, some of the old magma tubes long-since emptied of their magma can be found, though most have been sealed off by rockshapers as well. There is no threat of the volcano coming back to life for several more millennia at least.
The humans to the west are aware of the elves. Once per year during the limited daylight hours, the humans and the elves meet. It is a neutral event. Trade takes place. Elves and Humans alike can communicate with one another using various hand signs and the Human language to negotiate trades. There is no hostility between these two groups as both understand the hostile climate they live in and that a battle would cause both people to become weakened. In the past, hunting parties of both tribes have shared fires and even kills together. Occasionally some of the more adventurous humans have attempted to join with elves, though the elders of both sides have advised against it.
Events: Centuries ago, the elves were forced over the mountains by a tribe of humans south of the jagged hills. Unable to pass back the way they had come, as avalanches have since made the pass inaccessible, the elves have stayed and made a life of the arctic world. The truce between the humans in the north and the elves came about when, during a hunt, a party of elves found a party of humans. The humans had been attacked by one of the large bears and the huntleader was critically wounded. They were preparing a funeral pyre when the elves arrived. Despite tensions, Fleetwind, a young member of the elven party stepped forward and used his very new healing ability to save the life of the human hunter. Due to his inexperience and the difference between human and elven bodies, the young elf over-exerted himself. Before any knew how far he had gone, he slipped into unconsciousness. The Elves could not reach their holt in time to save him. The human chief led a party of warriors across the tundra to find the elves. The Elves, having seen the party approaching, readied their own warriors to defend their home and went out to meet them, expecting battle.
Instead, the Chief revealed his son, Karhuk, who was the huntmaster, still weakened from his injuries. Instead they offered furs and beaded tapestries, jewelry, and other items. It was clear this was meant as thanks for saving the life of their Chief's son. There were also numerous carvings, symbols that the elves had seen around the pyre that was being prepared for the wounded hunter. These were items meant to mourn. Instead of fighting, the elves and humans stayed for a few days, trying to communicate until, using symbols, hand signs, and familiar human words, they agreed to meet there, every year, to trade. The humans did not have access to the sea due to the glacier, and the elves did not have access to the branch-horns the humans herded. It was a time to trade ideas, to celebrate their differences, and their togetherness in a land that is determined to see them all freeze.
On very few occasions, elves, and humans alike, have been caught too far from home and sheltered by the other tribe until storms have passed. It is an unspoken rule to leave a gift of thanks, a trinket or fur from the humans, fresh meat or salted fish from the elf.
Currently: Both tribes are coming together to trade.
