SL2657F shook her head at the suggestion of finding humans. In her lifetime, humans have been the enemy. Her creators and owners. She was forced to be loyal only because of a sense of self preservation. Humans weren't the answer. The way he was describing using magic, though, she didn't know if it'd work. Magic was such a rare thing that she couldn't even begin to answer or suggest how it'd be done. "I <don't think> magic <will work on it.> I <don't know. It's...> I <don't think it's been tried. Ever.>"
She was getting more and more comfortable with the tiny translator, her ears perking as she stared upward briefly when the... bug? Was it a bug?... landed on her head, perching there to do its translating. For the moment, at least.

The boy was glad that at least one of the others believed him, since he couldn't really prove this facts. But he looked puzzled at Mahrak. “That things are more important to know then about some people long dead, because it's happening right now. We wanted to keep the knowledge alive, so we had a chance to make it right. No one gone lifetimes ago will help with that.” Not that this would happen now, with no one left and things turning gradually worse. Useless knowledge, since there was no way to influence something that big, but it was all that was left of their history, so he kept too it.
Flint nodded at Keleeros questions. “Ivy taught us how to read the stars and they changed too much for it to be on a consistent track. And I'm sure. We've traveled around all my life, not staying in one place longer than two sleeps and there wasn't one spot without magic to stand on in all this time. Let alone save places... here is some magic, but not everywhere and different.” Half-hearted he gestured around, trying to point at some feeling he could barely grasp, giving up after the first attempt.
About the preservers, he just shrugged – this and trolls and the High Ones were past the point of a myth in his world. “If they ever existed, they're long gone or changed beyond recognition.” Hard enough for him to connect these High Ones to his ancestors and him being an elf, a fact he wasn't entirely sure of. Not when he was born amid magic that effected any being.
Which was why he came back to the beacon thing Mahrak wanted to know about. “I got magic, fire one” A short point back to the 'sun' he'd lighted for the explanation with a slight move. “Magic changes beings and one day there won't be anything left of me. And then I don't want to be some wild running fire, a danger, so I... thought when I felt the time coming, I'd go to the highest point I can reach and just stay there. So that the magic has to stay there and even if it becomes a blaze, its light can be seen and avoided from afar, working as a fixed point in all the dark – a beacon.”

"Well, you can't know if we don't try!" Mahrak said to SL2657F, putting excessive cheer into his words. Bravado was his strong suit - if the half-cat was willing to risk it he'd offer his help. "Is there are healer around, in case something goes wrong?" There seemed to be plenty of magic users around, but he thought it best to ask first. His own people's healer had often been far away on her own business, so one could rarely rely on magic to save the day should one injure oneself in some way. He listened to Flint's further explanations with half an ear, not wanting to be outright rude but not too interested either. What did it matter what shape the world was? How was that more important than knowing who the High Ones were? Surely Flint had to know that spirits watched over them all, ancestors known and unknown. But he didn't say anything - he was in fact getting rather tired and the prospect of joining Longsleep in a long nap was looking like a more appealing idea by the minute. Flint's explanation of becoming a beacon unsettled Mahrak. The thought of becoming one's magic sent a chill down Mahrak's spine. He'd never even imagined that possibility, never heard of such a thing. He was quick to shrug the thought off before it could take root in his mind, simply giving Flint a nod in thanks for the explanation. Wherever Flint was from the magic had gone mad, somehow. Clearly that was not something that could happen here, Mahrak told himself. He would have known if magic could hurt him - his mentor would have told him. To distract himself, he focused his attention on the half-cat. "Do you want to try to remove your necklace right now?" OOC: Panda, do you want SL2657F to keep her collar? Either way you want it, I can have Mahrak's magic be enough or not to damage the collar and have it come off. It's up to you what happens

Keleero didn't quite agree with Flint when it came to the past and knowledge. To him, the more one knew of one's past the better one could prepare for future threats and strife for a better. However, this was not the time to start philosophical arguments. Better to ask careful questions and listen. "I have never heard of magic changing an elf to that extreme before," Keleero said to Flint. "Harm, yes, and ruined magic can twist places, but I'd never known it could do the same to people. Not that much." He paused, thoughtful. "Do you fear that will happen to you here? That the corruption will follow you?" In answer to Mahrak's question about a healer, he said: "We have two healers, Panaetha and Mindlight, and I think Juniper may know a thing or two about poison as he is skilled with all things that grow. They shouldn't be far away, if...something should go wrong."

OOC: Definitely something she'd be interested in doing, but I drew up a list of things that could happen and would simply roll the dice. Could be anything up to and including death considering that it was designed to not be removable or tampered with, it could end very poorly for her and anyone who accidentally comes in contact with the poison. There is of course the possibility that it comes off without a problem on there, too, but based on the design, it is a small probability.
SL2657F wondered if what Flint described, becoming the magic they wield, is why the Empire outlawed it? Some of it was because it could be used to fight back and obviously one in power wanted to keep their slaves from revolting. Still made her wonder, however. She turned her gaze toward Mahrak and tilted her head slightly, fingers trailing along the embroidered tag of her name. "I... I <have never thought about it. It's always just... been there... It never crossed my mind that it could be done. It never has.>" She listened to the translation, hearing the confusion in the bug's words. "<That doesn't sound right... No one has ever succeeded. The only time it's ever been taken off is when the wearer was dead.>" That was more easily translated, but the preserver began to ramble on about how that was bad.

He only listened half to the whole thing about the necklace – while it sure was good that she learned words, the mixed speech together with the preservers talk did make it all the harder for him. So he faded out at that, couldn't help either. Not with his scarce knowledge and certainly not with magic. Fire was too dangerous, too unpredictable for this. It was fairly safe if he only used it to start a fire, to keep it confined or in close proximity, but use it in a delicate matter on some other elf? No, that wasn't something he'd try.
The boy was glad that Keleero seemed to know more about magic, wasn't as scared of it as he was. “How should I know? We never saw it happen, it's just what Ivy told us – she was sure Jay had come back to her as an owl. A black one. She followed shadows through seasons... and when she left us, she couldn't just have vanished. And all the other people... the magic. It can't get these ideas on its owm!” There were great lacks in his education, since no one had been there to mentor his powers. What he did was based upon half-myths and very cautious experiments. “She hadn't even known – we kept it from her. All she ever said was that we shouldn't ever use it, to not get anymore compromised... but then we were alone and needed it.” They had been barely out of childhood, barely old enough to tend for themselves and she left them alone in a world where everything was hostile in some way.

OOC: That's an interesting way to doing things, Panda! Seeing as you wrote it yourself, I assume you're okay with "risking the life of your character"? Or would you like to wait for a while before trying to tamper with her necklace? IC: Mahrak hesitated. If no one ever had survived it... "Maybe we should have a healer here, just in case?" He was willing to try, but starting his first day in a new place with new people by maybe accidentally causing someone's death seemed like a bad idea. Then he had to stifle a yawn. "Or sleep first? I'm rather tired, now that I think about it." He glanced over to Flint and Keleero who still were in deep conversation about magic. Was he the only one who'd like to close his eyes for a long while? Now that the initial rush of learning so many new things and meeting so many new people had settled he realized how heavy his arms were, how his eyes stung.

Deeply fascinated by Flint's explanation of the dangers of magic, Keleero was only half paying attention to Mahrak and SL2657F. He wasn't sure how much he wanted to get involved in that - the half-cat had made it sound more than a little dangerous. No reason to risk oneself for complete strangers. "Became an owl?" Of all the horrific things Flint had described, somehow that sounded the worst to Keleero. Whatever the other things were, he imagined one wouldn't be able to think like that. But what would it be like to be trapped as an animal? Would one be able to think? Would a little of you be left, just enough for you to realize what you had lost? He forced himself not to shudder. "I've never heard of magic becoming that twisted. All I have known it to do is make magic disobey its wielder and to cause madness. Though I've also known of elves who could tame magic that have gone bad." Frowning, Keleero considered the display Flint had built, trying to memorize it. "Well, whatever knowledge you have I'm sure it will be very helpful. Though I would like to assure you that what you describe has never happened here to my knowledge." He doubted he'd have had the luck to not be on his own world, even now that this seemed to be a possible outcome of the beacon. "Magic is very helpful and when used responsibly not a danger. You only need to avoid bad places and...bad people."

OOC: Yes, though I don't know if I want to do so this early on lol. We'll see how it rolls in game and go from there.
SL2657F nodded her head slightly as she considered Mahrak's words, glancing back and forth between him, Keleero, Flint, and the little bug that was translating things, perhaps more than what was actually being said. Her head was pounding from trying to process two languages, even if one was her own just being spoken at a rapid pace. Sleep. Sleep! How long had it been? It had been a while since she slept, if you exclude her nearly drowning... "Slop?" She tried to say the word, but ended up mixing a sound up it seemed. She nodded her head. That was a good idea indeed.

The young one could only shrug at the thing with his father becoming an owl. They had never meet him and while they trusted Ivy solemnly because she was their mother, the twins had realized soon that sometimes, she would think in strange ways. He hadn't dared thinking too close about how it would be and with his fire playing in, he'd always figured to change based on his magic.
It was reassuring that none of the others had encountered magic like this, giving him confidence that it was nothing but the twisted ways of his home, however they came to be. Still it was hard to let go of fears he had all reason to have. What Keleero said about taming magic sounded familiar – like the little magic he had to notice bad things and keep them away for a moment. But he wasn't sure how to phrase that, couldn't show it like his fire. So the boy let it drop. “I don't know much.” he murmured, picking up the small things he'd laid out, returning them to his backpack. “And even less true things about magic”
There just had been no one to talk about but Sapling, who knew the same things, even if he came to other conclusions at times. By now, Flint was tired too, weary from life amid dangers – but he was unsure how to ask, having never slept near people he wasn't related too, without one half-awake to keep watch, in a cave, a safe place. Until now he'd never had to spend a night without his brother. So he just got silent, rubbed his eyes and pulled his backpack closer, appearing lost, mainly.

OOC: Just caught up with re-reading all the threads! Thought I'd post one-or-two ending post to this thread, so we can close it (you can of course post more for Flint and SL2657F here if you want here too ) IC:Exhaustion was taking over. Not the state to try any playing around with poisonous necklaces. Mahrak tried to stifle a yawn, but failed, and also failed to quiet a giggle at the half-cat trying to say the world 'Sleep'. "Agreed, stranger," he said in answer, smiling. "I hope no one minds if I sleep here?" He looked to Keleero then, gesturing at the large stone bowl he and Longsleep had seated themselves in. The furs and evergreen branches were soft, beckoning him to sleep.

"You seem to know plenty," Keleero said to Flint, trying to signal both respect and a wish for allegiance. "Magic might not behave as you expect here," Keleero hoped, "but you sound like a capable person who've studied and survived your world well." He really wanted to speak more of planets and stars-as-suns, but it was getting late.
Taking in what Mahrak and the cat-like newcomer where speaking of, he interposed: "Sounds like a wise decision to wait for later. Rest is important before attempting difficult and dangerous feats." He continued, "You are welcome to sleep there, yes. You are all welcome to sleep in here, wherever there is room. I wish you all a pleasant rest."
Keleero doubted he'd be able to sleep, but there was always work to do in the hot spring.

SL2657F glanced to the preserver who offered to 'wrap' her once more for sleep, shaking her head. She moved away from the others, keeping her ears perked. Once she did find a quiet corner, she let her eyes closed. It would be some time before she'd drift off, but even then it was a light sleep.
OOC: Short, but wrapping it for her here.

He smiled a little at Keleeros kind words. It had been a long time since his world had been about living, not merely surviving it and with Sapling and him being one of the only ones left, the hard earned knowledge showed despite their young age. “I don't expect magic to behave any way. That's what gets you killed.” The simplest rule of all: don't trust anything. Not even yourself and what you've see. What had been right could be wrong just a day later, so he took it all as it came. For now he needed some rest, nodded and moved back a bit to the wall, not using one of the sleeping bowls – Flint didn't even knew that was what they were there for, used to sleeping wherever he could stand. There was no need to worry about him not taking any furs, his fire magic meaning he rarely knew cold. Using his backpack as a pillow he fell asleep quickly, body taking what rest it could as long as it'd last.
OOC: Ending it here too!

"It's always wise to be cautious," Keleero said diplomatically, not sure he fully understood where Flint was coming from in his attitude towards magic - not yet at least. He would need to speak further with the newcomer, learn more. "I will leave you to your sleep then. I hope you all find rest." Not that sleeping was too easy in a new place. He himself hadn't slept much the first nights in Beacon Call. He'd likely not sleep much this neither either. But the Hot Spring Chamber always needed more work, so he'd be able to occupy himself at least.
