OOC: Making a short thread here for goldenbraid to jump in to and for No-Sting to finish tending to the two deer. This thread will merge with the " At Work" thread soon IC:Cleaning out the deer had been hard work, but it was nearing its end. Skinning had been tricky, but No-Sting was happy with the result. Now just came the challenge of getting the meat and skin away from the treeline where she'd had help stringing the carcasses up and all the way to the Beacon Room. Before she could send for assistance, she caught a scent on the wind. **That you, Goldenbraid?** Oddspot had already started eating the left overs of the two deer, but looked up from her meal and in the direction of the scent.

The last few days had at the time seemed long and trying, yet now as she thought back over them, they seemed to go by in a blink of an eye. Goldenbraid had set out hunting with Vareesi and Rokuta originally but the ‘squirrelly’ elf had separated and she assumed turned back, while she and the tall elder continued on, determined to find something. It had taken over another day before they had finally disturbed a few hoppers, who had been no match for the elves, wolf and bird and their hunting skill, and with no more success after that, the elder suggested she take the hoppers back while she took a bit more looking. She suspected Vareesi was hunting more for familiar signs that would lead her to where she was to her home and help her get back, than looking for prey. But then she couldn’t blame her for that and figure most of the collected elves were doing that or hoping for signs in varying degrees. Now not far from the mountain entrance, Goldenbraid noticed Lost-cause was looking a bit worn….. the big wolf’s age showing a bit on the longer treks than it used to, but her bond still had the stubborn determination of his youth. Her musings were disturbed by the low growl of her bond, followed by a sending from an unfamiliar source. **Yes, it is me.** She sent back, unsure of who was calling her by name. She and Lost-cause were just breaking free of some underbrush when she had a part answer, for she saw an elf standing by some cleaned meat and skins, a large cat nearby gorging on the discarded scraps. Though the elf was unfamiliar, Lost-cause confirmed the cat was the one from the cave when they had first arrived….. obviously this elf’s bond. “Hush old friend.” She said softly as the large wolf continued to growl at the cat’s presence. OOC: Sorry for the delay... won't bore you with the horrendous details of the last few days.....

OOC: No worries! I'm late too, as you see I hope things have been better for you of late! IC:No-Sting paused in her work and waved in the direction Goldenbraid's sending had come from, though kept one hand on Oddspot's neck. She sent calm to her bond-friend; bolding from a growling wolf was never a good idea, especially not now that they were all trying to be friends. **Rokuta is back with us so we were wondering where you other hunters had gone,** No-Sting sent to Goldenbraid. **Is Vareesi with you? A lot of new elves have arrived since you left and I think introductions are in order. There's even been a Recognition between two of the new ones!** Then memory caught up with No-Sting. Just because Goldenbraid had been among the first to arrive, like No-Sting herself, it didn't mean they knew each other. Stupid of me. I think it's hard enough to remember all the new names as is, should expect others to be having just as hard a time remembering mine.**No-Sting,** she sent to Goldenbraid, **in case you were wondering who I was. We haven't talked much, or see much of each other these past four nights, so...** She fell silent, feeling a little awkward. Goldenbraid might not have had trouble recognizing her mind-voice; maybe she just wanted to avoid company. "Eh, I've just finished skinning these," she continue with spoke words, gesturing at the two deer. "Jaseio, one of the newcomers, helped out with the skinning and gutting - I think she's in the caves now, fleshing the hide - but I could use some help with getting the last meat off the bones and back to the cave. We're going to smoke it, I think."

The return sending made Goldenbraid relieved to hear Rokuta had made it back safe, but also greatly surprised her…… more elves had arrived…… a Recognition? Seemed much had happened in the few days she’d been gone.
**We want to continue to hunt up some game, but all we got was a few hoppers.** She sent back. **And no Vareesi is not with me. She want to hunt some more and sent me back with the meat.**
She got Lost-cause to quiet, but the large wolf stopped, deciding to remain near the brush, but eyeing the cat and the scraps it was eating. She pulled the tied hoppers off his back walking towards No-sting, nodding at her explanation and giving a smile.
“Guess our merger catch won’t make a difference but might at least taste up the food some.” She said handing the hoppers over. “And if you need help getting this meat back to the others we can help.”
She looked back at her bond noticing him pacing back and forth, watching the cat and scraps intently, obviously wanting some but refusing to approach any closer. She knew she could likely make him come over with a bit of concentration, but hated to override his loner tendency and force him like that…. still a bit nervous about her ability.
“The only way you are going to get any is to come over and be friendly.” She called out to the large wolf. “This one is nearly half the size of the cats back home, you could possibly be scared…..”
Lost-cause stopped pacing and regarded her for a long moment, before giving a gruff growl and slowly step by step moving closer, till he was in reach of the pile of scraps. Carefully he stretched out his neck, pulling a good sized pile over to him and settling in to eat.
“Had a feeling that would convince him.” She said turning back towards No-sting.

"A few hoppers is nothing to turn our noses up at!" No-Sting said, her tone of voice cheerful. "The more mest we can store away the better. The last nights have been lean and I for one am tired of my rumbling belly. Too much meat is a gift from the High Ones at this point!" She gave a laugh at the antics of Goldenbraid's wolf, giving her own bond a look to make sure no fight was brewing. Thankfully Oddspot was used to sharing kills with others - even if the others usually were lynx and elves. "With the two of us, getting the last of the meat back to the caves will take no time. Just wish we had baskets to carry it in, but oh well." She began to gather the bloody burden, making a face at the mess it made of her coat. "Lucky we have so much snow to wash in. And you should see the caves now! One of the newcomers had a lot of furs with him, so the others have made the caves downright cozy." OOC: Let's jump to the "At Work"-thread after your next post

Goldenbraid smiled at No-Sting’s opinion that any meat, no how small the amount, was a blessing and to be appreciated….. a good outlook in her opinion. “Very true. Times can be lean and abundance is good.” When she mentioned baskets for taking the meat back, Goldenbraid glanced about thinking, still listening as the other elf talked about the caves and how a new arrival had brought furs to make them more comfortable. “Well caves aren’t something I’m used to, my clan preferred trees, but wrapping up in a fur, no matter where, will feel nice after last few days.” “Ummmm…… how about some brush?” She said suddenly, pointing to the bushes. “We can lash together a few branches and make a drag, or two, to haul the meat home…. avoiding getting our bonds’ fur sticky with blood. And the greener should help kill the scent so no predators follow the blood trail back to the cave.” ooc: Sure, can do.....

**Newcomer!** Keleero sent while his thoughts wandered. He sent openly to all within close range, and added an image of the elf who'd just appeared. Humans couldn't send, so he doubted the openness of the sending was likely to call any danger to them.

"Abundance during a whitecold is more than a blessing," No-Sting agreed with Goldenbraid. "My people live in trees as well. Hopefully Juniper will get chance to make us some...later." Come spring No-Sting hoped to be out looking for her old home, but it felt like bad luck to think such thoughts just yet. "Good idea about making the-" No-Sting was cut short in her praise by Keleero's sending. Another newcomer? "I think we'd better hurry up," No-Sting commented to Goldenbraid when the sending was over. "I think they could use all the help they can get explaining the situation to the new one. And more meat is never wrong to have when telling someone bad news." OOC: Feel free to have Goldenbraid enter the "At Work" thread at any time with the meat - I'll have No-Sting follow right behind with her own drag

So to better get a grip on the situation and to have the helmet confirmed as Vareesi's she lock-sent to her sister. ~**No-Sting, we found this whilst out scouting, so now I need your help. Can you tell me if this is Vareesi's helmet? And if so do you know where she is? Because seeing this sort of makes me anxious.**~

Swift-Wind's sending caught No-Sting by surprise. She recognized the thing in Swift-Wind was watching all right. ~**That is her helmet for sure. Goldenbraid returned not five heartbeats ago and she said Vareesi stayed in the woods to hunt alone. Something must have happened to her! Is there blood?**~
To Goldenbraid she said: "Swift-Wind just lock-sent to me. The scouts have found Vareesi's helmet, without Vareesi." As if a newcomer wasn't enough to put everyone on edge. "Did you see any sign of danger when you left her? I'm sure you wouldn't leave her to face danger alone, but was there any sign of some large animal or, eh, something else where you were?"
((OOC: Waiting with entering the "At Work" thread until Mindlight's made another post, to make the timeline ))

Swift-Wind was unnerved by the reply she got from No-Sting. If Golden-Braid was back without Vareesi something had happened for sure. But what, she thought to herself. She had not sen any blood, but then again, she hadn't looked for it. She told her sister just that. ~** i haven't noticed any blood on it, though I never really thought of or got a chance to examine it closer.**~ she lock-sent to her sister.
Ooc: Should there be blood on the helmet?

Awaiting an answer from Goldenbraid, No-Sting took the time to reply to Swift-Wind: ~**I trust you scouts to find out what has happened to Vareesi. We'll send to you if she comes back to the caves.**~ OOC: Tag goldenbraid whenever you have the time

Goldenbraid smiled when No-Sting mentioned living in trees, honestly not having really thought about what kind of holt the catrider would have, the hill cats back home the only she’d know till then generally lairing in caves, she guessed she’d just assumed that was the what No-Sting was used to.
This Juniper must be a tree-shaper, she guessed from her words, another elf with magic powers, though she was used to one of those having had one in the holt, not that many knew that. She did wonder about the non-descript ‘later’, as if she was unsure if it would happen…. or maybe of being around when it did?
The other elf was saying something about her idea for the drags when she was cut off, likely by the sharp sending from Keleero about another arrival that blared in her mind, the image of her sent too.
“You probably right.” She answered shortly when No-Sting suggested hurrying back with the meat to help explain things to the new elf, and the way they were appearing maybe more by the time they made it.
They were ready to drag the meat back when No-Sting suddenly informed her some elves scouting found Vareesi’s helmet….. without her with it! What had happened to the elder?
“There was nothing.” She said, when the other elf asked about when she’d turned back at the elder’s suggestion. “No sign of anything, much less danger, none. If there had been any indication of a large animal, or any animal, we’d of tried hunting in down. Those hoppers had been the only thing we’d found in a couple days.”
The elder’s helmet getting found abandoned was a great worry, for one, she’d left Vareesi a good distance from here, and the scouts couldn’t have travelled that far out without her having run into them. That meant the elder had been part way back before she had vanished, or at least lost her helmet……
“Is there any sign of Aire, her bird??” She asked.

No-Sting wasn't surprised that Goldenbraid hadn't seen any danger - who would leave their hunting partner if they had, right? "The scouting team hasn't seen any signs of a struggle or any blood, so there's hope it's nothing dangerous. Maybe she dropped her helmet while flying away from danger? Or maybe she threw it at an attacker? To scare away some animal?"
Not the best of excuses, but No-Sting didn't want to entertain the other possible thought - that there was something invisible here that could grab you, even outside the Beacon Room, and wisk you off to places unknown. The invisible force could of course get you home, but there was no guarantee of that...
"They didn't mention anything of her bird," No-Sting answered Goldenbraid's question while doing her best to gather up the last of the meat. "We should go back to the cave. Safety in numbers and all that. Vareesi might even find her way back here on her own, without the scouts spotting her first, so we should prepare in case she has wounds we need to tend to. Do you know anything about healing? Without magic, I mean."
